Line 5 poses risk to our water, tourism economy

As the state mulls a proposal to build a tunnel for Line 5, the pipeline is still an everyday risk to our precious Great Lakes and the state’s tourism economy that depends on it.

As the owner of Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak, Lake Michigan is so unbelievably important to our business, our local economy and our freshwater way of life.

Lake Michigan’s beauty can be admired while kayaking, swimming, walking along the shoreline or surfing the lake’s peeling waves. Time at the lake is worth savoring, and millions of visitors come to our state every year to do just that.

I worry about how we can best protect and preserve our waterways for years to come. I want to continue sharing my love for my community and my love for the big lake with others.

Line 5 puts our water – for leisure, livelihood, and for drinking – at risk.

An oil spill that contaminates our Great Lakes would be devastating on multiple fronts. Our lives would be forever changed. Our tourism and local communities would face a challenge the likes of which have not been seen.

The shop encourages our customers to foster a love for the Great Lakes and be good stewards of our freshwater playground just as myself and family does.

I urge Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to shut down Line 5 immediately and put this issue to rest.
