ANN ARBOR, Mich. — As U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) announces his planned retirement from Congress in 2026, we reflect on his years of dedication to the Great Lakes and the businesses that depend on their protection and health. The Great Lakes Business Network extends its deepest gratitude to Senator Peters for his commitment to strengthening our communities and advancing a healthy and vibrant democracy. Throughout his 16 years of public service in Congress, his bipartisan leadership has brought together diverse voices to champion the protection of the Great Lakes region.
Senator Peters has been instrumental in enhancing the protections to Michigan’s land and water, a legacy we will work hard to defend. Through his ability to build consensus around critical legislative actions, he has addressed pressing issues such as PFAS contamination, invasive species, polluter accountability, and harmful algal blooms. His leadership was pivotal in securing the first increase in funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), and growing bipartisan support for improving the health of our waters for an additional five years.
The Senator’s collaborative relationship with the Great Lakes Business Network (GLBN) has fostered meaningful conversations and advancements. We deeply appreciate his willingness to engage with concerned business owners and his continued commitment to addressing Great Lakes issues. His 2018 field hearing, to hold Enbridge accountable for massive safety failures, underscores his dedication to prioritizing our freshwater for generations to come.
Peters’ forward-looking approach has provided opportunities for clean energy investments that address the threat of climate change and create meaningful jobs in the process. His support for the Inflation Reduction Act further demonstrates his commitment to sustainability and a thriving future for our region.
The Great Lakes Business Network thanks Senator Peters for his tireless dedication to the Great Lakes, his across-the-aisle leadership, and his many years of public service. We look forward to collaborating in the final two years of his term to safeguard our right to clean water from legal challenges posed by Canadian oil companies.
The Great Lakes Business Network was proud to collaborate with regional partners to identify shared policy priorities that will promote clean, healthy lakes and sustain the Great Lakes economic engine.
